”How to enjoy yourself during lockdown” 

ミズーリ州コロンビア市からこんにちは！

私はショーン・ベイティーです。コロンビア・パブリック・スクールで日本語を教えており、2回、白山市を訪れたこともあります。今年は世界中の人々にとって印象的な一年となっているのではないでしょうか？この危機に対して、アメリカ政府は効果的な対応ができなかったものの、コロンビア市と同市を管轄するブーン郡政府は、国よりも速やかに事態を把握し、取り仕切っています。

Greetings from Columbia, Missouri.

My name is Shawn and I teach Japanese in Columbia Public Schools and have visited Hakusan twice.　This certainly has been an interesting year for all of us.
Despite our national government not responding effectively to the crisis,Columbia and Boone County have been on top of things.
They responded faster than our state government.

コロナウイルスの影響を受け、コロンビア市の学校は予定より早く春休みに入りました。学校はすぐに再開されるだろう考えていた人も多かったのですが、残念ながらそうはなりませんでした。私たち教員はオンライン授業に切り替えて、生徒たちのケアに全力を尽くしました。私の授業では、ステッカーのデザインコンテストを実施しました。優勝した生徒のデザインは、実際にステッカーとして作成しました。

We ended up going on spring break a few days early with plans of coming back, but unfortunately that didn’t happen.
We transitioned to online schooling and did the best we could. I even had a sticker design contest where my students designed stickers.
The winner would have their design made into a sticker.

ベイティー家では隔離に真面目に取り組み、買い物など、出かける際はマスクを着用しています。そしてマスクを着けるならば、楽しみながら着けるに越したことはありません。

My family and I have been quarantining fairly well,and wearing masks when going shopping.
And if you’re going to wear a mask…
you might as well have fun doing it.

私が思うに、コロナウイルスに対するアメリカ政府の対応やリーダーシップにおいて物足りない部分があったことは非常に残念に思います。それに加え、アメリカではマスクを着ける習慣がなく、抵抗を示す人も少なくありません。天候が良くなり、少しずつ外出禁止令が緩和され始めている今、マスクを着けたくないと考えている人が増加しています。これは、アメリカの個人主義がネガティブな形で表れている結果です。

Unfortunately, we haven’t had very good national leadership or response in my opinion.
Add to that Americans are not used to wearing masks, so there has been resistance to wearing them by some people.
More so now that we are slowly opening up and the weather is getting nicer.
Unfortunately, this is the American idea of individualism showing through in a negative way.

※白山市補足：その後、コロンビア市では、7月6日（月曜日）、「マスク着用令」（mask ordinance）が市議会で可決され、7月10日（金曜日）より90日間の着用が市民に義務付けられました。

隔離中、散歩で家の前を通る子どもたちを少しでも楽しませるために、動物のぬいぐるみを何個か家の窓に置きました。

During or lock-down, we put some stuffed animals in our front window for kids to spot if they were going for a walk.

息子2人と「マジック・ザ・ギャザリング」というカードゲームで遊ぶ機会が増えました。子どもたちとゲームで張り合って楽しい時間を共有できました。

My two sons and I have been playing the card game “Magic the Gathering” more together.
It has been fun competing a bit and having that time together.

夏に日本に訪れる予定でしたが、残念ながらキャンセルをせざるを得ませんでした。そこで、野菜を育てる小さな畑を作りました。私の妻（※ベイティー先生の奥様は日本人です）は紫蘇（しそ）が育てられてとてもウキウキしています。紫蘇の他にも、インゲン、トマト、バジル、レタスなどを育てています。

There were also plans to visit Japan this summer,but unfortunately those had to be cancelled.
So this summer we built a small raised garden.
My wife is super excited to be growing shiso.
She is also growing green beans, tomatoes, basil, lettuce and a few other things.

外に出ることは非常に大切だと思っています。何回かソーシャルディスタンスを意識した少人数のたき火を開催しました。そして裏庭にテントを張って“キャンプ”もしました。

Getting outdoors has been important.
So I’ve hosted a few socially distanced fires.
Additionally, we’ve put up a tent in the backyard and done some “camping”.

私事ですが、世界中にいる友達と久しぶりに話をしたり、一緒にネットゲームを楽しんだりする機会ができました。隔離中、毎週火曜日と木曜日に、同僚や友達、その知り合いたちと“ゲームナイト”を開催しました。今は毎週水曜日に行っていて、ストレスの溜まりやすい日々の中で笑いを提供してくれます。

As for me, I have had a chance to reconnect with friends all over the world and do some virtual gaming.
During the lock down I held weekly Tuesday & Thursday game nights with colleagues,friends and friends of friends.
Now we do it every Wednesday.　It has provided a much needed laugh in these stressful times.

今なお大変な状況が続いており、なかなかやりたいことも出来ませんが、感謝すべきものもたくさんあります。近くにいる人々と繋がり、遠くに住んでいる人と心を通わせ、世界の皆さんが共に同じ状況であることを忘れずに、前向きな姿勢で頑張りましょう！

この状況が落ちついたら、また白山市の皆さんにお会いできる日を楽しみにしております！

Even though things are tough and we can’t do everything we want to do, there are lots of things to be thankful for.　Stay connected with the people around you,
reach out to those who are farther away, stay positive and remember that we are all in this together!

I look forward to seeing you all in Hakusan as soon as this is all under control!

コロンビア市ヒックマン高校日本語教師。
2018年7月、日本語を学ぶ生徒3名を引率し来市。
自身も白山市内でホームステイを行い、翌2019年7月にホストファミリーに会いに再び本市を訪れている。

Originally from Iowa State.
Japanese teacher at Hickman High School in Columbia City
Led a group of 3 students who were learning Japanese to Hakusan City in July, 2018.
In July 2019, returned to Hakusan City and visited his homestay host family he stayed with the previous year.
